I have just finished Chapter 2 of Shawn Wilson’s book Research is Ceremony. There is a lot of “technical” stuff about different research paradigms and definitions of terms which I cannot possible hope to remember unless I am actually using them within the context of the course when we are at Blachford.
I also am remembering a bit of the research methodologies which I studied a couple of years...

There is a lot of reading to do for these courses. I just found all my old notes from the classes I did at U of T. I opened the first “pile” today and found a basic summary written by the Shawn Wilson in the Cdn Journal of Native Education which really summarizes his book (which is one of our text books!) He wrote the article in 2007 just as Research is Ceremony was at the...

Interesting post about gardening in the North. I live on the old Bode farm just outside of Yellowknife. The whole valley was tilled and planted every year in the 1940s — the produce was sold to everyone in town and to the mines.
It is possible to garden. Since my husband died, I have not been able to do much. The poplars are staring to take over. Does anyone want a garden patch this...
Please put your name on the postings
For some reason this site does not include your name when you post. It has to be put at the bottom … in this “posting” section so that we see who is posting what.
Looking forward to meeting everyone.
Is anyone making summaries of the readings? I found Andrea Smith’s reading a bit difficult — she quoted a lot of other people in the process of attempting to make her...
Alfred's book for the Governance course
Has anyone begun to read this yet? I am about half finished the Power section. Most of the Peace section was beginning to annoy me — lots of repetition. And just when I thought the Power section was going to be the same, he began to come up with some better ideas.
I am not too fond of the “conversations” he is holding in each section. But I may begin to like them better as I...
Governance & Core Course
I have finished Stephanie’s book Finding Daasha. I enjoyed the portions about the Gwich’in claim .. I was trying to see if I knew any of the participants! I did not realize that the Deline people were negotiating a claim on their own… I knew there were meetings there, but did not realize that they were the only parties to the claim.
I enjoyed the portions about moosehide...
Spring Melt!
It’s plus one today. The light is staying until ten pm… The northern lights are still out at night. Dechinta is budding again. From around the north and south, people are packing their knapsacks and making their way to Yellowknife. Love for the journey.

Re,: Sustainable Tribal Economies HTE reading
Logistics mean high food prices but history suggests that #NWT & #Yukon are capable of growing their own produce - Agriculture remains a tough sell in the North http://bit.ly/gTyjaq In decades past, missionary priests and workers at isolated posts tilled large, productive gardens.

A bit about me!
Hello everyone — My name is Cristine Bayly. I suppose that I am an “elder” as I am over 60 years old. I have lived in Yellowknife since 1974, raised 4 children of my own and looked after 2 of my late friend’s children for a few years. I ran my late husband’s law office for 15 years during the time I was raising my children. I am a weaver, a sewer and a quilter. ...
"Why Dechinta?"
